UConn Huskies head football coach Randy Edsall told Chuck Banning of the New London Day that he is not interested in taking the job at his alma mater Syracuse.
“There has been speculation in various media outlets that I am a candidate for the job,” Edsall told The Day this morning. “But with all due respect to my alma mater and the people at Syracuse, I am not interested in being a candidate.
“I just want to continue to coach at the University of Connecticut and prepare my team for this week’s game against South Florida and the rest of our 2008 schedule. I don’t want this to become a distraction to my players or coaching staff as we move forward.”
This is good news for the Huskies going forward. I’m also happy that Edsall decided to nip this in the bud before it became a distraction.

I dont wanna send up any flags here because I’d love to see him stay but I just want to say Nick Saban and other coaches have said virtually those very same words DURING THE SEASON only to turn 180 degrees later and move on.
Randy Edsall will no longer be a candidate at the ‘Cuse the moment someone else’s name is signed to a contract.
After throwing that up quickly while I was out this afternoon, I thought about it some more and agree with you that until Syracuse hires a coach not named Randy Edsall, he will be a candidate.
and until (and if) he leaves UConn for a bigger better job at a football university (Clemson, Auburn, Tennessee) he will always be mentioned whenever the Syracuse spot opens up. It’s inevitable.
If the school is going to lose a high caliber guy like Randy Edsall I’d rather see him go to a big football school (or the NFL) and take a step up rather than a step down.
