Syracuse Orange AD Daryl Gross announced this afternoon that he was firing head football coach Greg Robinson with 2 games to go in the season. Robinson will stay on to coach those final 2 games.
In 3+ years with the Orange, Robinson had a record of 9-36 and was 3-25 in Big East competition.
Why is this important to UConn fans. Well the rumors now will start to fly about Randy Edsall going to coach his alma mater. For the record, Edsall really didn’t have much to say.
“I don’t talk about personnel issues and never will,” Edsall said. “I’m just concerned about coaching this football team here and making them better and just getting focused for South Florida [Sunday night] and that’s it.”
“I don’t talk about personnel issues as I’ve just said . I’m just focused with this team, trying to make us better and do the things that I can to make our team the best we can and I’m just focused on South Florida.”
The Syracuse Post-Standard says that Edsall is very interested in the job. Just like we did last year with the Georgia Tech opening, we can expect the rumors to run rampant over the rest of the season.
Edsall Won’t Discuss Now-Vacant Syracuse Job [Hartford Courant]

I’d hate to see him go. he’s done such a great job here and he’s gotten much better facilities for the team. To leave all that hopefully is difficult. I also know he has kids at or near high school age and I’d be willing to bet money, well if I had any, that those kids don’t want to leave their lives and friends here in CT.
Why would he want to leave here to rebuild another program? He has UConn on the rise.
I understand the allure of going back to coach your alma mater but he was supposedly very upset when he didn’t get the job when Robinson was named coach.
With Edsall’s new extension last season, it would cost him (or Syracuse) I think $1.5 million to buyout his contract.
I could see him leaving if it was for an ACC, SEC or Big 12 school. You want to link him to Auburn, Clemson, Tennessee I could see him leaving for one of those or a similar opportunity that is a considerable step up. But I just do not see im leaving to go to another Big East school especially a step down from where he is, even though he played there. It’d be like Jim Calhoun leaving to go coach at AIC.
