Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 11/15

Will he be leaving on a jet plane?

It was a very quiet day for news out of the Boston Red Sox offices on Yawkey Way as it appears they have not made any offers to free agents. It could also be that the media didn’t learn of any either. Given the secretive nature of the Red Sox sometimes that could be the case.

The biggest free agent news yesterday was the Yankees offer of 6 years and over $140 million dollars to C.C. Sabathia. That’s ridiculous. Hasn’t anybody learned from the Barry Zito debacle? The Yanks also plan to offer contracts to A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe. The way the Yankees are going right now it’s quite possible they could have a $250 million dollar lineup next season (I may be exaggerating that just a little bit).

Obviously the Red Sox pressing need is at catcher. We all they re-sign Jason Varitek to come back. But if you think back to the end of the 2004 season, they let Lowe, Pedro Martinez and Johnny Damon all walk and sign elsewhere. It is very possible that the Red Sox could do the same with Varitek. Trust me, this isn’t any anti-Tek sentiment at all, it’s just a reality that could happen. Do I want that to happen? Heck no I don’t!

Former Red Sox first base coach Luis Alicea has found a new home with the New York Mets.

According to Mike Lowell’s doctor Bryan Kelly, Lowell’s rehab is going according to plan.

Joe Fitzgerald of the Boston Herald shares a story of random kindness by a Red Sox fan.

Damon left after 2005 not 2004.

this is from Bloomberg on 11/14 (Friday):

Lucchino said yesterday he’s unsure whether the Red Sox will bring back 36-year-old catcher Jason Varitek, who’s spent his 11-year major-league career in Boston. Varitek was one of nine Red Sox to file for free agency.

Like I said in the post, that wouldn’t surprise me at all.

The funny about that quote is if you read the entire piece it’s kind of cryptic. It’s just like stuck in the middle of nowhere with nothing really leading up to or anything after it.
