Josh Beckett will try to get the Red Sox a win before the long road trip.

After losing last night’s game to the Toronto Blue Jays, the Boston Red Sox turn to Josh Beckett to get them a win before they leave the friendly confines of Fenway Park for the next 10 days. During that 10 day trip, they will play AL East foes the Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees and finish the trip with 3 games against this same Blue Jays team. Currently, the Jays hold a 5-2 advantage in the season series.

Beckett has faced the Blue Jays back in his first start of the year when he returned from the disabled list.  He went 4 2/3 innings, allowing 5 runs. In his career, Beckett is 3-4 with a 4.92 ERA in 9 starts. On the season, Beckett is 11-8 with a 3.92 ERA in 22 starts.

Shaun Marcum starts for the Blue Jays this afternoon and he’s had some success against the Red Sox. In 9 appearances (4 starts), he is 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA. He picked up a win in his only start against the Red Sox this season allowing 3 runs in 7 innings of work back on April 4th.

Tim Wakefield played catch this morning but Terry Francona hasn’t set a timetable for his return to rotation.

“We want him to be able to come back and pitch with health. We don’t want him to go backward (by returning too soon),” said manager Terry Francona Sunday morning.

“We wanted to have that target date and work backwards to get him ready, but we have two days off (over the next two weeks) and we can maneuver the rotation is someone needs rest and we don’t know that yet,” said Francona. “We’ll figure it out.

With Wakefield on the disabled list, Kevin Cash will see his role change a little until Wake returns.

Terry Francona spoke about former Red Sox manager Dick Williams who is being honored before the game today.
