Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 8/1

Manny Ramirez

Back in 2005, we went through a similar scenario involving Manny Ramirez and the Boston Red Sox. There was talk of Manny heading to the Mets in as 3-way deal with the then Devil Rays but it never happened. Then Manny comes in and delivers a game-winning pinch-hit single against the Minnesota Twins moments after the trade deadline and then has this infamous interview with NESN’s Eric Frede.

Unfortunately after the trade of Manny to the Dodgers yesterday, we won’t get to see that moment again. We will never see Manny ever don a Red Sox uniform again. Will there be Manny being Manny moments in Los Angeles, you can bet on it. You can also bet on more of them happening wherever he signs during free agency in the offseason.

I’m guessing you woke up this morning with that lost feeling, like you lost your favorite baseball card or baseball glove, something it seems like you’ve had your whole life. For 7+ years, we’ve been through all the trials and tribulations of Manny. From the highs to the lows, we in Red Sox Nation (it was the nation before Dr. Charles Steinberg and the trio of John Henry, Larry Lucchino and Tom Werner decided to cash in on it) have been there for all of it. So it’s normal to have that lost empty feeling this morning.

Are we going to get over it? Sure we are. It may take us some time although I’m guessing for some that Manny’s latest comments may have helped you along a little faster than others.

Think back to when you were 16 and fell in “love” that first time and then all of the sudden she dumps you for the high school quarterback or the star running back. You were sad, maybe even upset that your one true love was gone and you’d never be able to go on in life. You can admit that because we’ve all been there before in our lives.

Did you get over it? Sure you did but it took time. No matter if you loved her or hated her, you got over her and moved on to one of her friends probably (women can reverse the scenario to where he left you for the head cheerleader or one of the cheerleaders).

The same applies here. You will get over the loss of Manny. Yes you were expecting him to be wearing a Red Sox uniform for the rest of his career and now are thinking that you’re going to have to change the name of your dog or cat because you loathe Manny. All normal reactions I tell you because you will get over it.

If we sit here and lament over the loss of Manny, we aren’t going to be able to move on. Sure there’s going to be that grieving period where you pinch yourself just to make sure this wasn’t just all a bad dream. Believe me, I’m with you, I wish it was a bad dream too. I am even sure you might even sneak a peak at the Dodgers boxscore tonight just to see what Manny did. You might even have stopped by here earlier in the evening when we have posted what Manny has said in his press conference this afternoon at Dodger Stadium.

No matter what you do, you will be fine.

Now I know this isn’t the normal news and notes posts you are used to, I promise it will look somewhat normal after the jump.

It’s been a 10 days or so for the Boston Red Sox that started back in Seattle when Manny decided he wasn’t playing. The club lost 2-of-3 to it’s hated rival the New York Yankees and then were swept by the California Anaheim Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim earlier this week. Now they enter tonight’s matchup with the Oakland A’s without #24 in the lineup. Consider it Day 1 of L.A.M (Life After Manny).

The one thing that’s surprised me about all of the happenings of yesterday was the fact that the Red Sox never publicly spoke about the trade. The first communication from the Red Sox came around 12:00 midnight when they said there will be no announcement until all the issues are finalized. I found that to be a strange thing given the magnitude of the trade. Gordon Edes, who’s in his last days at the Boston Globe, gives you a look at why he thinks the Red Sox haven’t spoken yet about the deal. Edes also offers up a poem sent to him by a reader.

Tonight we will get our first look at Jason Bay. Steve did a great job of giving you some background on him and Matt Porter from the Boston Globe gives you some things about Bay as well.

While I do feel the Red Sox may have given up too much to get rid of Ramirez, the fact remains that Brandon Moss was stuck in a logjam in the outfield and Craig Hansen has been mediocre at best in his time with the local nine. With 4 outfielders here in Boston, there’s not much of a chance for him right now. Sure he’s been great when he’s been up here and he won’t be forgotten for that. Now, he’s got a chance to start over in Pittsburgh as the Pirates plan to put him the big leagues.

Your favorite Boston Herald writer Tony Massarotti (cough cough choke) says Manny is the ultimate winner in all of this while Steven Krasner of the Providence Journal says we can expect the Red Sox offense to not pack the same punch as it did with Manny in the lineup.

The Track Gals want to know where Manny will pee at in Dodger Stadium since he will no longer have a place to go #1 during a game. Maybe Dr. Chuck will have a temporary Green Monster built for him.

And last but certainly not least, David Scott from Scott’s Shots tells us about Peter Gammons comments on ESPN 890 yesterday while keeping you up-to-date about all the other happenings in the Boston media.

There’s plenty of more stories you can check out on everything by heading over to the Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Hartford Courant and Providence Journal websites.

Gammons was good but so is Callahan. That bastard lives for things like this.

What’s the under/over on Manny’s quitting on the Dodgers? Or his next club?
That’s the point here. On a team full of guys who would run over their mom to win a game, it was only a matter of time before this happened. The lack of return on Manny was an indication of just how big cancer he’d become. How much crap can you take from a player before his talent is overshadowed by his lack of heart?
Now at least Tito can worry about winning games and not whether he could count on #24.
Sadly, Manny’s legacy is as a quitter not a hitter.
