What's Theo thinking?
Juan “effin” Uribe? I really hope not but according to CBSSports.com, the Boston Red Sox are interested in acquiring Uribe from the Chicago White Sox to help out at shortstop while Julio Lugo is out.
The article says that Alex Cora could be the person moved if this deal is done.
I don’t exactly understand why the Red Sox would go out and get somebody who can’t hit a lick. Uribe does have a great glove. Plus it seemed like they were happy with Cora. To me, this deal is a downgrade at the backup shortstop position since it appears Jed Lowrie will get a bulk of the starts while Lugo is out.
Uribe is hitting .225 with 3 home runs and 18 RBIs in 54 games while Cora is hitting .279 with 0 home runs and 5 RBIs in 37 games. Uribe has a .294 OBP while Cora’s OBP is .380.
If anyone can figure out why the Red Sox would make this move, let me know please. I just don’t get it.

Seems so dumb on so many levels to be true. Who the hell is this Knobler guy? I mean think about this. It doesnt work because:
1. it doesnt improve the team offensively
2. he makes more than Cora and Lowrie combined
3. they arent hurting for a shortstop
I could only see it if it was part of a larger deal for Boston but even then it doesnt add up. Knobler is saying that its because uribe has more HRs than all the Sox SS’s combined. Its not like he’s the second coming of Cal Ripken at the plate. if they want to get a shot stop from Chicago go get Cabrera back.
I emailed Gordon Edes and he got right back to me he said it was all over the clubhouse today but Cora knew nothing about it.
Seeing as this has been out there since about 7p or 8p last night and anyone who has even mentioned it is only referring to CBS sportsline and neither the Boston or Chicago media have anything on it. I’d say its some tool throwing shit at a wall to see what sticks.
In fact Uribe was almost released two weeks ago but the ChiSox didnt wanna eat his remaining salary estimated at nealy $1.8 million.
That’s why when I look at the trade, it just doesn’t make sense at all. You’re already paying Lugo all that money and have a very capable shortstop in Jed Lowrie so why pay someone the rest of his estimated salary for the season.
Like you said, probably somebody trying to see what mileage he can get from some shady information. Now if it had come from the Boston or Chicago media or even Buster Olney or Rosenthal, it might have more legs.
i am a little confused as to why the sox would wanst uribe? I would rather have him than cora though cuz cora is a joke. Uribe has had some 20+ homer seasons which i hope he is still capable of if th bosox get him. Now i am wondering if there is more to this than we are being told. Maybe the bosox will get uribe and maybe o cab for lugo, cora, and a prospect. I sure hope so as i think getting o cab would be a great move for the red sox.
The two teams arent trading all their short stops to each other. Lugo is on the DL and unable to be traded and if he were to traded it wont happen until the offseason.
As much as I love Orlando Cabrera for some reason the Sox brass doesnt. He wont be coming to Boston.
As for Uribe offensively he is not a Boston kind of guy his OBP is sub .300 for his 8 year career. Ad for some reason everyone thinks he is some sort of defensive wizard well in ‘07 he had 17 errors, 14 in ‘06 and 16 in ‘05. His career fielding pct is just slightly better than Lugo’s (.976 to .965).
Another tragic case of Epstein Restless Shotstop Syndrome.
He just cannot get through a single season without making a stupid trade for yet another shotstop. When will it end? When will they find a cure for this maddening disease…..????
From Sean McAdam of the ProJo:
This doesn’t mean they won’t do it but when guys like Edes and McAdam seem to think there isn;t anything to it I’m more inclined to go with them than some shit stirrer at cbs sportsline.
I am a White Sox fan I will tell you exactly why it make sense. The teams have agreed to balance the difference between the two contracts, so each team would be paying equal amounts to each player. Cora may be a better hitter, but Uribe a better defender. The BoSox have said that that is why they want to acquire Uribe. He is not only better defensively than Cora, but Lugo as well. They may use Uribe off the bench as more of a 9th inning defender, but also back up the SS position as well. I know you BoSox fans don’t want this to happen, but it may be for the better if the Sox agree to pay the extra money on Uribe’s contract, then you basically get rid of a backup IF and his contract and gain one without paying his contract who is better defensively. It may not seem like it works out, but somebody in the BoSox organization thinks it will.
From Nick Carfardo:
While the Red Sox examined whether to pursue White Sox shortstop Juan Uribe, major league sources indicate the team backed away from a possible deal to acquire him.
The Red Sox really like the job done by Jed Lowrie and feel that Alex Cora can be an adequate backup to Lowrie until Julio Lugo returns to the seen sometime in mid-August. That’s not to say the Sox won’t consider another veteran shortstop if the fit and price is right.
Cora’s career fielding pct is the exact same as Uribe’s .976.
