Sabathia To The Brewers

July 6th, 2008 by Ian · No Comments ·

C.C. SabathiaThe Milwaukee Brewers have gone out and made the first big move of the trade season that is upon us as they have acquired C.C. Sabathia from the Cleveland Indians for minor leaguer Matt LaPorta and two lower-level prospects and a player to be named later according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Sabathia had a rough start to the season but has pitched better as of late for the Indians. In the months of March and April, he was 1-4 with a 7.76 ERA in 5 starts. He had a much better month of May going 2-3 with a 2.44 ERA in 6 starts while in June his ERA continued to dip as he went 3-1 with a 1.89 ERA in 5 starts. He didn’t get a decision in his last start against the Chicago White Sox as his ERA for the start was 4.50.

Overall on the season, Sabathia is 6-8 with a 3.83 ERA.

Matt LaPortaLaPorta was the top prospect in the Brewers organization as rated by Baseball America and was the 11th overall in MLB by Baseball America. He was originally drafted out of high school by the Chicago Cubs in the 14th round but elected not to sign with them and decided to attend the University of Florida. After his junior season, he was taken by the Boston Red Sox in the 14th round in the 2006 draft but didn’t sign with them and returned to the Gators. He was taken in the 2007 draft as the 7th pick overall by the Brewers.

LaPorta was hitting .288 with 20 home runs and 66 RBIs for the Brewers Double-A affiliate the Huntsville Stars.

The Brewers have been the front runner as of late coming out ahead of the Phillies, Rays and Dodgers. The Red Sox and Yankees were rumored to have an interest in him as well.

If all the details are worked out, the Brewers expect him to make his National League debut on Tuesday night against the Colorado Rockies.
