In the latest Quinnipiac University poll, the Boston Red Sox have overtaken the New York Yankees as the most popular team in the state of Connecticut.
41 percent of Connecticut now supports the Red Sox while 40 percent support the Yankees. Just 9 percent of the population here are fans of the New York Mets.
In last year’s poll, 37 percent of the residents of Connecticut supported the Red Sox. You have to wonder if winning the World Series last season changed the minds of fans here.
The map below is how the poll breaks down in each county in Connecticut. New Haven and Middlesex counties along with Tolland, Windham and New London counties were polled together.

I’d say in Fairfield its more like 88% Yankees fans…I dont know any Red Sox fans here
and either way CT is definately a Giants state. Definately a Rangers state.
as for the other sports…football, basketball and hockey I think it’s more of split depending on where you live much like the Sox/Yanks split.
I don’t think many folks in CT really care about the NHL any longer. If you took a poll and asked people what sports they watch, not who they root for, you’d probably find other minor sports and college basketball and football eclipsing it.
One other thing regarding this poll or any other poll the margin of error is generally +/- 3%. so therefore the poll is probably more likely unchanged than anything else. Either way we live in split state.
Ok, well I live in Fairfield County, I go to other parts of Connecticut for my job in journalism. I see a lot of Red Sox fans, but mostly Giants fans if any football stuff…I’m a Jets fan. There are none anywhere other than where I live and even then the Giants totally have us outnumbered.
Hockey its the Rangers if anything either. I’m a huge Rangers fan, more than the Jets, not as much as the Yanks. I converted a lot of my friends and neighbors!
We true New Englanders reject Connecticut! How can we trust you guys with all those Yankee bas@#$%s down there!
Well, I was born in NY, my family’s from Long Island, I lived in Manhattan, and I moved to an hour outside of CT when I was 10… I’m 17 now…yeah, I’m a true New Englander all right (not!)
I dont even like Uconn!!!
If you think about it, all people from New England are Yankee bastards since we live north of the Mason-Dixon line.
And if you go down to the south, they will let you know for sure. There’s some people who are, how can i say this politely, behind the times a little.
I agree with Steve in that most of the state doesn’t care about the NHL. I’m sure down in Fairfield county that’s a little different being closer to New York.
Connecticut will probably never have another professional team, except for the potential UFL team and will always be known as minor league state. And I’m ok with that.
The great thing about sports teams is not everyone likes the same one. That’s what makes the rivalries better. When the fans can have a civil disagreement about their teams then it’s all cool. it’s when it gets personal is the problem.
