Daisuke Matsuzaka returns to the hill today for the Boston Red Sox after just over 3 weeks on the disabled list with a rotator cuff strain. On the season, Dice-K is 8-0 with a 2.53 ERA in 11 starts.
To make room for Dice-K on the 25-man roster, the Red Sox placed Mike Timlin on the 15-day disabled list with knee tendinitis. He is expected to be shutdown for a few days before resuming a throwing program and will make a couple of appearances in Pawtucket before being activated.
Timlin going to the DL gives new life to Chris Smith who was likely the odd man out had Timlin not gone on the DL. This is the second time Smith has been with the Red Sox on the season but has yet to make an appearance in a game this season.
Manny Ramirez will not play the field at all during the homestand and the Red Sox hope to have him back in the outfield when they travel to Houston for their last interleague series of the season.
