This night at Fenway Park just continues to get stranger and stranger for the Boston Red Sox.
Between the 4th and 5th inning, Kevin Youkilis and Manny Ramirez had to be restrained from each other in the Red Sox dugout after some sort of verbal disagreement. No one is sure what happened, but you can check it out for yourself below.
I didn’t think it would ever come out. I’m sure it was just tensions running high. They are probably laughing about it right now. Too bad it got caught on tape, though.
I like this instant gratification stuff, myself. Very helpful to those of us who live out of NESN territory.
I wonder if Manny didn’t get a chance to meditate today? I can think of only one other time (via pictures) when I’ve seen him ticked off enough to require restraint.
I’m stunned that Manny and Youk went at it. I love both of them but Youk had to have something really screwed up for Manny to flip out on him like that.
I was at the game and had no idea about this particular sideshow.
Let’s see, Youk was put in RF at the top of the fourth, this happened at the bottom. With Ells and Crisp down, I figured Tito would put Manny at left, maybe Carter in center, bring Youk in at first, and have Casey DH. I was shocked and amused to see Youk in the outfield. The only explanation would be that Manny’s hammy was bothering him too much, but if he could still DH which could require running, WTF? Maybe Youk felt the same way and started a ‘conversation’ with Manny?
I wonder if this had anything to do with that at bat when Manny was bailing a little? Could Youk have said something about that? I dunno, certainly could be wrong, just taking a stab.
If Francona took Manny out of the DH spot and put him into left field, the pitchers would have had to bat for rest of the game.
Carter hasn’t been playing CF down in Pawtucket, only left field. The only person with center field experience that’s left is J.D. Drew.
So that gets us down to Youk and Lugo, both of whom have played the outfield. Youk has only played left and there’s no way their going to play Lugo in right field.
I’m not going to speculate on what they said since Tito said it’s been resolved.
Between the brawl, people being kicked out of the game, and Jacoby being taken out; people got stressed.
Youk had the night off; and he never played left field before. Manny comes out of the game for an injury. Youk probably said something flip because Manny is adament about his days off. They were shorthanded, players were uptight, and tempers were on a short fuse.
I think this pretty much proves that Youklis’s crappy attitude this season has become intolerable even for his own team mates. Manny is an extremely laid back individual, and certainly not one to react with anger of that magnitude unless provoked in some way. Obviously, Youklis is an amazing ball player, but even I, a life-long, die hard Red Sox fan am sick of his pouting, mouthing off to umps, and just acting like a drama queen in general.
Actually, he has played in right before. It was for just an out or two during one inning a couple of weeks ago. But he HAS, in fact, played in right before.
krz is correct. Youk took over in RF on May 13th when Coco left the game early. Someone needs to tell Don & RemDawg that since they said it was his first time playing right.
Francona hasn’t lost control of the team. Like everyone else is saying including Francona himself, there was a lot of testosterone in the air last night.
He has not lost control of the team . . . It was a high tension night. Apparently Youk said something to Manny about how he didn’t do anything in the brawl and was about 10 minutes late out of the dugout to protect his teammate. That’s certainly true, although on a normal night it goes unsaid.
Where was big mouth Youkilis when Ramirez got fired at by Farnsworth in April? Ramirez doesn’t get even upset when he’s the target, and if he was the last one out lat night at least he spent his time picking Rays off the pile, not rubber necking. How many punches did bigmouth Youk land? From what I saw, zero.
So who exactly appointed Youk judge and jury? Or does that pontificating judgmental attitude come with the union rep job?
“Apparently Youk said something to Manny about how he didn’t do anything in the brawl and was about 10 minutes late out of the dugout to protect his teammate.”
That’s the most likely explanation I’ve heard so far.
Ramirez was late to the scrum because he was having his hair done by Sox hairdresser LMontro in the clubhouse. Youkilis, being bald, was jealous, and cried about it. Ramirez b-slapped Youk, and before the cat fight could get out of hand, wiser heads, hairy or not, prevailed.
I don’t know who’s the biggest pussy out of Crisp, Manny, and Youk. Crisp swings like a bitch, Manny gives pussy bitch slaps and for such a big dude, Youk takes it and doesn’t throw a shot at Manny??? At the least Youk should steal the money Manny stuffs in his glove compartment.
Don’t be sorry that you speculated. That’s human nature. We saw something happen with no explanation given and of course we want to know what was the cause of it all.
This is what happened.. Manny said something to Youk (in Spanglish).. Youk didn’t understand and probably let that be known..Manny came back with the weakest shot i’ve seen.. but an impressive show of power shoving the Greek God of Walks into the dugout steps.
I think I saw Tito really lacing into ManRam there too at the end of it. I hope it’s sorted out. I’ve had plenty of knockdown drag outs with my brother.. but not since we entered adulthood.
Johnny Gomes is a bush league fighter and an awful baseball player.
im sure youk said something along the lines of manny not doing anything in the fight..i would never think manny would react like that because hes always so chill about everything but maybe that struck a nerve because manny believes he shoulda done something. who knows..its over
Manny wasn’t even in the dugout when the brawl started. He was in the tunnel on his way out. Therefore he was one of the last guys on the field. Youk called him out on it and promptly got rebuffed by Manny. Again, a lot of tension and testorone flowing right then
A Red Sox source told ESPNdeportes.com that the cause of the dugout disagreement was Youkilis’ temper following a poor at-bat.
“It all happened because Manny complained about Youkilis’ habit of throwing bats, helmets and other objects in the dugout when he has a bad at-bat, something that has become a constant practice,” the source said.
“Other players have told Youkilis in the past about the situation, which makes him look selfish and that he is more worried about each at-bat than about the team. If Boston is winning easily, there’s no reason to throw objects all over the dugout because of a bad at-bat.
“There was a meeting where the team let Youkilis know that many of his teammates were tired of his explosive reactions for each bad plate appearance. It became very bothersome … more so when the team is winning and it’s in first place. There’s not much room for individualistic attitudes.”
That’s what everyone thought. But Gordon Edes of the Globe reported it had nothing to do with the Rays fight.
Ramirez got tired of Youkilis throwing equipment around the dugout every time he had a bad at-bat. Said something to Youkilis and didn’t like Youk’s answer so had to smack him.
From what I’ve read, it’s been building up for awhile. There was even a team meeting called about Youkilis and his selfish tantrums. A lot of players were sick of Youk’s act. It comes across as ‘me’ too much.
Sounds like Youk had it coming and Ramirez was just in the mood to oblige.
Thanks Jack, I actually had meant to write Manny-Youk tiff instead of brawl as I first commented. Too many fights last night to keep them all straight.
It definitely sounds like youk had it coming and one day he could end up hurting someone when he throws his shit.
I am just shocked. We will probably never know what really transpired, but it is just so out of character for Manny. WOW..what a night!
Terry Francona just said that he said the matter was handled already and didn’t elaborate anymore.
I wonder if Manny or Youk will say anything. But let it be done and the boys can move forward with the business of winning baseball games.
I didn’t think it would ever come out. I’m sure it was just tensions running high. They are probably laughing about it right now. Too bad it got caught on tape, though.
It’s better off not being made public because I’m sure it’s something stupid.
I agree. It’s definitely too bad it got caught.
most definitely but it’s a different day and age now with cameras everywhere plus bloggers like myself putting up the video in such a quick fashion
Normally you’d have to wait until the news or something to get it. Now it’s instantaneous.
I like this instant gratification stuff, myself. Very helpful to those of us who live out of NESN territory.

This is all speculation of course.

Boys, it is called testosterone.
Between the brawl, people being kicked out of the game, and Jacoby being taken out; people got stressed.

Correction: He never played right field before.
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT MANNY IS A DIRT BAG I WISH YOUK WOULD HAVE BEAT HIM UP
damn were bringing out all the looneys. obviously this guys golden thong is too tight.
Just another typical Yankees fan. It’s not like they don’t have their own problems or anything.

sure, Youkilis is hot-headed with umps, and so’s Pedroia, but I wouldn’t say he’s had a “crappy attitude” this season.
Manny gets away with a lot of sh-t that the other guys couldn’t because he’s “being Manny”- and Youk probably called him on it.
Actually, he has played in right before. It was for just an out or two during one inning a couple of weeks ago. But he HAS, in fact, played in right before.
It’s clear that Francona has lost control of the team. I think it’s time that Theo makes some serious changes.

Manny doesn’t like Jew-Koulis.
It was anti-semitism.
i’m pretty sure it has nothing to do with the fact that Youk is Jewish but rather is something like what Craig said.
For me it’s a dead issue. It happened, they resolved it.. end of story.
Expect to see Ramirez crucified on Mel Gibson’s cross! You can’t hit a Jew!
How about Youk calling Manny out for not being a part of protecting Crisp? Was Manny out there in the fray??
“Apparently Youk said something to Manny about how he didn’t do anything in the brawl and was about 10 minutes late out of the dugout to protect his teammate.”
That’s the most likely explanation I’ve heard so far.
Kristin… you’re an idiot… youkilis is the best, hardest-working player on that team and sets an example for everybody…
i suggest you quit your bitching…
Ramirez was late to the scrum because he was having his hair done by Sox hairdresser LMontro in the clubhouse. Youkilis, being bald, was jealous, and cried about it. Ramirez b-slapped Youk, and before the cat fight could get out of hand, wiser heads, hairy or not, prevailed.

The biggest pussies are Gomes, Shields, Navarro, and Crawford.
They make Crisp, Youkilis, and Ramirez look like extreme fighters.
At this point I’m sorry I started speculating. I was trying to make sense out of something senseless between two guys I adore.
Even the best of brothers sometimes fight. Let’s leave it at that.

heidi watney? oh man, who cares. it’s not like she can shed any light during a live broadcast, what’s she going to do in an online chat?

This is the reason for the Manny-youk tiff. It was also posted in the afternoon delight post and this one comes from ESPN deportes.

anyone see this one. Garza and Navarro going at it after Garza gave up a home run and then again in the dugout.
Oh Ian, you just made my night!
