Coco Charges The Mound – Updated With Postgame Reaction From Coco

June 5th, 2008 by Ian · 25 Comments ·

Coco Crisp and James Shields throwing punches

After the incident that took place last night involving Boston Red Sox outfielder Coco Crisp, you would have hoped that nothing would have come of it.

Shockingly enough that didn’t happen though as Tampa Bay Rays pitcher James Shields hit Coco with a pitch in the leg leading off the bottom of the 2nd inning. It appeared that Coco was going to go down to first base but he surprised everyone and charged the mound and the benches emptied.

Here’s the video goodness of the fracas.

Personally, I think Crisp is in the wrong here for charging the mound. Shields hit him in the leg and Coco should have just gone down to first base and this whole nonsense is over with. Instead, Coco will find himself suspended as well as Shields and probably a host of others, most notably Jonny Gomes, who was also ejected, and I’m sure Carl Crawford, who came in from the outfield to get some punches in on Crisp.

As far as other Red Sox players getting suspended, it’s hard to tell if anyone else did anything. If anything, it’s quite possible that Red Sox 3B coach DeMarlo Hale could get a suspension for his tackle of Shields although it’s very rare for a coach to get suspended during a brawl since their role is supposed to be peacemaker.

And to make matters worse, Jacoby Ellsbury rolled his wrist in the top of the 3rd inning and had to leave the game with a wrist injury. Currently, the Red Sox are employing an outfield of Chris Carter in left, J.D. Drew in center and Kevin Youkilis in right.

X-rays were negative on Ellsbury and he is listed as day-to-day with a strained right wrist.

Postgame reaction from Coco after the jump.

I agree, Coco should have gone to first but I do like to see a spark in the team. Thanks for posting this. I forwarded it to the rest of the class I am in and no one is paying attention to Search Engine Optimization.

  • Ian

now that just sounds like a fun class Luke.

You can’t expect the injury to Ellsbury to happen but if Crisp just goes down to first, this whole mess is over.

I like the spark too but at least be smart about. He wasn’t smart about it.

“Personally, I think Crisp is in the wrong here for charging the mound.”

Yeah, Coco has been building up a head of steam since yesterday. Francona should have seen this coming and put a halt to it before it happened, given Crisp his marching orders. Plus, Shields was stupid for not waiting until later in the game. AND now Manny and Youk are going at it. Even the broadcasters. I feel like kicking the dog myself.

Coco: “They were scratching me and trying to pull my hair like little girls.”

    Nice.

Dave McCarthy on NESN post game show on Jonny Gomes: “He’s got one coming coming down the line.”
Any takers on who gets to drill him?

    Beckett
    Timlin
    Colon
    Delcarmen

Oh I’ll get that postgame interview up later but that was by far one of the funnier postgame interviews.

He’s still on that tic for tac kick though.

  • Mike

I loved that postgame interview. Anyone know of a place online where you could watch it again. Coco was hilarious.

  • Ian

I’m working on it right now Mike. It’ll probably be another 30 minutes or so before I can get it posted. I’m writing a Sox recap and watching the Celtics game.

  • Random Hero

first of co co should go back to picking cotton, and all that to get the shit kicked out of u fuckin porch monkey

  • Ian

Well with that comment, I can understand why you wouldn’t use your real name. Is that even necessary to make such a racial slur?

    I don’t think so!

  • Random Hero

ian go suck a dick buddy, like you have to live your baseball dream threw watching get some skill learn to throw a ball, and ya it is cause co co got the shit kciked out of him and now jsut got sent bak to south america on the door he floated over on

  • Ian

You know the best part about your comments asshole is that you have now found yourself banned from the site.

  • njdevils

I’m glad you stood up for Coco like that, Ian.
And, hey, at least you can spell correctly!

  • Ian

    Thanks.

I can handle any criticism that comes my way. You come to expect that when you do this.

But if you’re going to make a racial slur or any other inflammatory remarks like that then you get what you deserve.

I should delete the comments but what’s the point. I took care of the issue and he won’t be visiting the site anymore unless he gets another IP address and if he does, he’ll join the other one in the banned bin.

  • njdevils

And that’s why you’d make an excellent governor.

You don’t let a “Random Zero” stand in the way of doing what’s right. Most people would have just let that slide or ignored it, but you definitely made it obvious that that type of attitude should not be tolerated.

Maybe that guy/girl won’t be voting for you, but anyone reading this who now sees that you are a great person (in addition to having a great site) will be sure to support you.

  • Steve

where did that guy come from? judging by his intelligent commentary I’m stunned he could even turn on a computer.

  • Mel

I think Sean Casey (of all people!) got in a punch on Shields, but it’s hard to see it since much of the replay is focused on Crisp and the Rays on top of him.

  • Ian

It does appear that The Mayor did get one punch in on Shields. It’s at about the 2:45 mark of the video.

  • Mark

he shouldn’t have charged the mound, I mean, he could have made a better show of walking up to 1st base and yelling and asking him to “go”. I loved the dip and duck and then coming over the top with a sweet jab. Baseball needs to shake the detritus off every now and then.

  • Christin

Do you by any chance have the postgame interview “Locker Room Uncut” with Sean Casey? If not that’s fine, but I kind of wanted something from there…

  • Katie

What’s done is done and Crisp did charge the mound but the pitcher for the Rays did admit that he intentionally hit Crisp. I believe that only a few players will get suspended but I do not think Crisp will get the worst as he did not throw the first punch. All I have to say is Crisp had a right to be upset. He wouldn’t have been called “out” if the base was not blocked on Wednesday. We will see what the outcome is. Hopefully it won’t be too long because with Ellsbury injured, we need every player we can. Pray for the Sox

  • Ian

Christin I’ll double check to see if I still have last night’s game on here and if I do, I’ll post the video here in the comments later.

  • Ian

Christin per your request the Sean Casey interview along with one from Jason Varitek.

  • jesse

how do i download the video of the fight to my computer

  • Christin

    Thank you! You’re awesome. :)

  • drew

i think crisp should have left his past behind him. Now he’s looking at a few game suspension and look what he could have done last night for them. sox where up but couldn’t pull through. =\ ticked me off really badly that the sox had to switch pitchers 3 times and still could not come out with a win. I’m a hardcore sox fan for 15 years now and am getting tickets whenever i can to see my sox but i like to see them win! stop getting suspended and injured for the love of baseball! lol Ortiz, Schilling, Crisp, please!
