Fans celebrate Manny's 500th home run

In case you missed it last night, Manny Ramirez hit his 500th career home run in the Boston Red Sox 6-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles. You can catch all of the video goodness right here at SOX & Dawgs.

If you’d like to see some homemade videos from people at Camden Yards, head over to Red Sox Monster where our friend Dan has gathered the videos. Be sure to check out the first one where a fan does a somersault. Anthony over at the Oriole Post has pictures of the entire game as well.

Jon Lester was on the bump for the Red Sox last night and his outing was just okay. He had his moments where he looked good and those when he looked bad. He definitely doesn’t look as good right now as he did leading up to the no-hitter and the no-hitter itself. Hopefully John Farrell and Lester can figure out the problem.

Sean Casey is one lucky SOB. He has seen 3 people hit their 500th home run, Sammy Sosa, Ken Griffey, Jr and now Manny.

“It felt like we were at Fenway,” Casey said. “There was three-quarters Boston fans here. It was crazy.”

“It’s impressive,” said Casey. “We’ve got a great bunch of guys in here, and the guys here appreciate the history of baseball. To hit 500 home runs is not easy. That is a tough thing to do. Five-hundred times he’s rounded the bases – that’s amazing. We have a good mix of young guys and older guys and the appreciation is there. People should stop and take a minute to appreciate it because you may not ever see that again in your career. We watched history tonight. When our careers are over we can all look back and say ‘I saw Manny Ramirez hit his 500th homer.’ If that doesn’t give you the chills, you shouldn’t be playing this game. Every guy in this clubhouse appreciated what they saw.”

The Orioles road uniforms in 2009 will say “Baltimore” after 36 years of saying “Orioles”.

Great article here from Jeff Goldberg over at the Hartford Courant about Manny’s preparation being as legendary as his power.

Former Red Sox idiot and current Baltimore Orioles first baseman Kevin Millar has been slowed by a strained hamstring the past 10 days.

Some bad news for the Sox happened in the 9th inning last night when David Ortiz felt some pain in his wrist and had to leave the game. X-rays on his wrist were negative and he’s listed as day-to-day.

Also not to be lost in all the hoopla of last night’s game is the fact that the Red Sox activated Clay Buchholz from the 15-day disabled list and optioned him to Pawtucket.

“We just want to make sure he understood what we’re trying to do,” said Francona. “We’re trying to take out the [element] of him concerning about the line score. He can go be consistent [in Pawtucket] and pound the strike zone with his fastball. He can work on his arm slot and things like that.”

“His off-speed stuff is probably as good as anybody’s in the game,” said the manager. “Again, some times you just need a little more time to finish up what you’re doing. We’ll continue to monitor it, because of how important he is to where we’re going.”

With the plethora of starting pitching the Red Sox have right now, this is probably a good thing for Buchholz. Let him go down there and work on things before coming back up to help the Red Sox. Don’t worry folks, he’ll be back.

Josh Beckett gave Daisuke Matsuzaka some sound advice on what to do with his time on the disabled list.

For more slices of Boston Red Sox goodness, head over to the Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Hartford Courant and Providence Journal websites.

And if you must see what the enemy papers are saying you can check out the Baltimore Sun and Washington Post websites.
