New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker will be presented the 2008 Pop Warner Inspiration to Youth Award Saturday night at the 48th Annual All-American Scholar Banquet in Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort.
Welker is receiving the award for his commitment to working with youth through the Patriots and his “83 Foundation” which provides underprivileged children in Oklahoma City the opportunity to play football.
The Inspiration to Youth Award is presented to an individual who has inspired the youth of today to become great achievers of tomorrow by the Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. (PWLS), the largest national youth football and cheerleading organization in the United States.
Past recipients of the Inspiration to Youth Award include Kurt Warner (2005), Tim Brown (2004), Drew Bledsoe (2001) and Junior Seau (1994).
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was inducted into the Wesleyan University Hall of Fame Friday afternoon along with marathon great Bill Rogers. The pair was among seven athletes, one coach and three teams as part of the inaugural class of the newly formed Wesleyan Athletics Hall of Fame.
Belichick, Class of 1975, played three sports at Wesleyan in Middletown CT as he lettered in football, lacrosse and squash.
