A poor shooting night by both clubs kept the game low scoring as the Cleveland Cavaliers came away with a 5-point win over the Boston Celtics, 74-69 at the Quicken Loans Arena Friday night in Game Six of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Game Seven will Sunday afternoon at the TD BankNorth Garden in Boston with the winner facing the Detroit Pistons for the conference championship.
After a tight first quarter that saw the teams battle to an 18-18 tie the Boston Celtics looked like they might end their streak of road losses in the playoffs as they were playing well and holding the Cleveland Cavaliers to about 30% shooting from the field. Boston had built a 31-25 lead about half way into the second quarter and combined with the defense things were looking good.
But somewhere along the way the Green forgot for a while how to shoot as they started to resemble to Gang who couldn’t straight missing 15 consecutive shots that ended up becoming a 26-4 Cavalier run.
That run eclipsed the late second and early third quarters as Cleveland built it’s 9-point half time lead to a 16-point lead early in the 3rd quarter at 51-35.
But Boston went on a 13-0 run of it’s own to cut that lead all the way down to 3 at 51-48 late in the 3rd quarter before the Cavs ended the 3rd on a 8-2 run of their own and a 59-50 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Celtics were able to cut the lead to 5, 65-60 midway in the 4th quarter but Cleveland was intent on not letting them get any closer. In fact the Cavaliers behind a weird stutter step jumper from LeBron James upped their lead to 9 at 69-60 with just over 4 minutes to play.
A pair of Paul Pierce free throws cut the lead to 5, 72-67 with just over a minute left but as the Celtics tried to get back to 3 points Pierce was called for an offensive foul with 49.9 left to play.
After a James miss, Ray Allen went to the hole and got fouled by former Celtic Wally Szczerbiak and canned both free throws with 23.4 left to cut the lead to 3 at 72-69.
Joe Smith hit a pair of free throws for Cleveland with 14.4 left to give the Cavs a 74-69 lead and made it a two possession game that really ended up doing in the Green.
Cleveland was led by James who had a double-double with 32 points and 12 boards, Delonte West had 10 points and Szczerbiak added 9 points in the win that forced the Game 7.
Boston was led by Kevin Garnett who had 25 points, Pierce had 16 points and Allen had 9 points.
Limited tickets for Game 7 go on sale at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
