The Boston Herald has apologized for an article that was published back on February 2nd, 2008 that stated that Matt Walsh had videotaped the walkthrough of the St. Louis Rams before Super Bowl XXXVI.
Here is the apology in it’s entirety:
On Feb. 2, 2008, the Boston Herald reported that a member of the New England Patriots’ video staff taped the St. Louis Rams’ walkthrough before Super Bowl XXXVI. While the Boston Herald based its Feb. 2, 2008 report on sources that it believed to be credible, we now know that this report was false, and that no tape of the walkthrough ever existed.
Prior to the publication of its Feb. 2, 2008, article, the Boston Herald neither possessed nor viewed a tape of the Rams’ walkthrough before Super Bowl XXXVI, nor did we speak to anyone who had. We should not have published the allegation in the absence of firmer verification.
The Boston Herald regrets the damage done to the team by the publication of the allegation, and sincerely apologizes to its readers and to the New England Patriots’ owners, players, employees, and fans for our error.
Personally, I think it’s a horseshit apology. Instead of a personal apology from Jon Tomase for publishing the article, the Herald issued a generic one.
Do they honestly think that this is going to win the Patriots fans over that they have already lost? I highly doubt it judging by the comments already left at the Herald on the apology post. For me it’s a little too late as I will not read nor use any links from the Boston Herald Patriots coverage (after this link to the comments of course).
Also judging from the apology, it appears my guess of Tomase making up the story could be true. If they knew the story was false, they should have made that apology right away because to me their credibility is shot since the story had been picked up several national media outlets. Tomase and the editors who allowed this story to be run need to be fired.

Hopefully The Herald’s removal of Tomase’s recent posts from the Point After blog means he has been fired for his utter lack of professionalism and journalistic ethics. He has cast an unflattering light on all sportswriters and damaged The Herald’s already shaky reputation as a source of reliable news and sports coverage. The damage he has done to the Patriots organization and all Pats fans everywhere can never be undone. He must be driven out of town and out of the newpaper business.
