Former New England Patriots video assistant and self proclaimed area scout Matt Walsh is meeting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell this morning. As we all know Walsh turned over eight videotapes from games involving six opponents and the taping of defensive signals. At least one of the video’s contained taping of an opponents offensive signals.
So as you put down your morning coffee you have to wonder what kind of questions Goodell will ask Walsh. After all, there was no smoking gun of the St. Louis Rams Super Bowl XXXVI walk through.
All of what Walsh sent Goodell is stuff New England head coach Bill Belichick has already admitted to. Belichick has admitted to taping signals since he took over in 2000. Nothing Walsh has turned up in evidence has added anything to this mess.
If I were Goodell first thing I’d ask Walsh and his attorney Michael Levy is why the hell are we here at 7:30 a.m.? You’ve contributed nothing. This is yesterday’s news. If all you had was yesterday’s news why did we need more than two months of negotiations so I could make some popcorn, have an ice cold coke and watch home movies?
Some in the media, cough Sal Paolantonio cough, feel Goodell should ask Walsh some tough questions along the line of the Watergate hearings?
“When Walsh was taping the opponents’ sidelines, how much was he told to conceal his activities? What measures were taken to conceal his taping? How concerned were his superiors that what Walsh was doing would be uncovered by a member of the opposing team? Was Walsh worried about getting caught? Why?”
“What kind of instruction did Walsh get in how to tape the opposition’s sideline? Who gave Walsh those instructions? Whom did he report to?”
“What happened to the tapes? Where did they go? Who analyzed the tapes of the defensive signals? Were there written reports based on the tapes? Who wrote those reports?”
Some main stream media members want to be the next Woodward and Bernstein. Guys it’s football, this has gone on since the invention of videotape and in other forms prior to that. Why the inquisition?
Walsh either has something verbally to give up to Goodell or he was seeking his full 15-minutes of fame. If Walsh does make allegations in his meeting he obviously has no physical evidence to back it up and apparently no one to corroborate it. If he doesn’t make any allegations Walsh should be pitied as a self centered loser who sought and got his 15-minutes over nothing.
Obviously the Coventry CT native and Springfield College grad has some sort of mental disorder. My 12-year old son wouldn’t have held out this long for something this dumb. The only thing this week I’ve heard that makes less sense than Walsh holding out for face time with Goodell and Senator Arlen Specter is that NESN’s Red Sox themed dating show, Sox-Appeal, won a New England Emmy.
There is only one logical explanation for why the assistant golf pro has pushed for all this. He wanted a free trip to Washington DC. Maybe he missed out on that in the 8th grade. It’s the only thing I can think of why this has gone on this long.
And thankfully with any luck it will all be able to go away after today.

Let’s hope this is the last we hear of this after today’s meeting with Goodell and then his later meeting with Arlen Sphincter.
