I am sitting here trying to figure out what the real story of last night’s game Boston Red Sox vs Detroit Tigers game is. Is it Tim Wakefield’s 8 inning, 2-hit 6 strikeout performance? Or is it Big Papi and Manny having back-to-back jacks? Or is it Manny’s 497 home run of his career came on the first pitch of Freddy Pelosi’s MLB career.

Manny isn’t too concerned about hitting his 500th home run, from which he is now 3 away. He broke a 14-day homerless drought with his bomb in the 7th inning last night.
“I’m not worried about it,†Ramirez said. “Like I was talking with LMontro, he said, ‘Manny, when are you going to hit 500?’ I told him, ‘Eh, I’ll hit it this year.’ And then I said, ‘Hey, if I hit my 500 home runs this week are they going to pick up my two ($20 million contract) options?’ We both laughed.
“I’m going to do it this year, so I just relax. I’m going to hit eventually, so why do I have to do it this week? You know what, if I do hit 500 I’m still going to have to hit 497 (which he did), 498 and 499. It will happen.â€
Kevin Cash had a solid night behind and at the plate last night.
Jim Leyland was out working with Miguel Cabrera at first base before the game yesterday.
Curt Schilling took his first throws of the 2008 season yesterday and will repeat the performance on Thursday.
After saying he didn’t want to catch for the Tigers, Brandon Inge told Leyland yesterday that he would catch if Leyland wanted him to.
Wakefield was amazing last night. He had total command of his knuckleball last night which only made his other pitches better.
“He threw all strikes,” manager Terry Francona said. “Obviously with his knuckleball, but he threw some fastballs, he threw some breaking balls – maybe the best breaking ball we’ve seen all year. Commanded everything. Wake kept them off-balance all night, never let them get untracked.”
We all know Wakefield usually goes on one big run during the season where he wins a bunch of games in a row. Hopefully last night’s performance was the start of something special for Wake
