While I was watching last night’s Boston Red Sox game, I kept saying to myself “here we go again”. What I mean by this is that the Red Sox are getting great pitching from a starting pitcher only to probably have it wasted because the bats are as cold as the chill that’s running through the air. You really couldn’t fault the bats last night though because Roy Halladay was as equally dominating on the mound as Jon Lester was.
While Kevin Youkilis had the walk-off single and Lester had the dominating pitching performance last night, you could argue that the real hero of the game was Dustin Pedroia. If it weren’t for his outstanding diving grab of a Vernon Well’s shot up the middle, the Red Sox could have easily lost that game.
If you missed Pedroia’s grab or Youkilis’ walk-off hit, here is the video goodness. Internet Explorer users can click here, other browsers can stay. For some reason there’s an issue with videos played on IE as it stops every 5 seconds or so.
Jacoby Ellsbury missed last night’s game with a sore groin.
The lineup changes John Gibbons made didn’t help the Blue Jays last night.
Youkilis had some high words of praise for Halladay after the game last night.
“In my opinion, Halladay is going to be a Hall of Fame pitcher,” said Youkilis. “He’s so unique in today’s game. He had three complete games in a row.
“It’s fun facing him because you just know you’re going to be against one of the great competitors in the game. So you battle and battle. Sometimes he gets you. Other times you get him, but he’s always a challenge.”
As much as you hate Halladay sometimes, you have to admire what he does on the mound. As Youk said, the complete game is a lost art in today’s game. Usually most starting pitchers are out of the game by the 7th inning as the specialists come into the game to finish it off. What sucks for Halladay is that he has 4 complete games and losses in 3 of those 4 games. Oh by the way, it’s still April and he has 4 complete games.
Here is another look at Halladay and a look at the injuries of Red Sox.
