Former New England Patriots punter Mike Patrick has died, the team announced on Monday. He passed away Sunday morning at age 55 at his home in Biloxi, Mississippi from unknown causes.
Signed as a rookie free agent in 1975, Patrick spent his entire career with New England from 1975-78. In his first career game, he had a booming a 62-yard punt against the Houston Oilers. It was the longest punt for the team since 1968.
“I think what people would remember most about him is that he was probably the most gregarious, happy-go-lucky guy you would ever meet,” former Patriots teammate and longtime friend John Smith said. “He was the most generous man I’ve ever met and would give you the shirt off his back. He had that great Southern drawl and people were just drawn to him.”
