Dustin Pedroia tries to slide into home

A new night, a new hero for the Boston Red Sox. Two nights ago it was Manny Ramirez with his bat, last night it was Jason “Oh Captain, My Captain” Varitek with his bat. Varitek’s pinch-hit home run put them on top before they added another run and then Hideki Okajima came on and closed the door on the Erie Warriors. The win last night for the Sox got them where they belong, 1st place in the AL East.

Jed Lowrie made his MLB debut last night and struck out in his first at-bat. However, he got his first RBI when he hustled down the line to beat the relay throw on a double play ball. Then in the 7th inning, his 2-run single put the Red Sox on top 3-2. Here are some video highlights of the game including Lowrie’s first RBI, his first MLB hit, Tek’s pinch-hit home run and Jacoby Ellsbury’s catch to end the game as well some postgame interviews.

Alex Cora will head to the disabled list for the Red Sox today.

Joe Borowski was actually injured during the spring but the Indians kept it quiet.

Josh Beckett became a salesman last night when he presented Lowrie with his first MLB hit ball. The Red Sox players doctored up a ball with

Sayings such as “Nice 3,000,000 chopper,” and “2 RBI, but K’d in his first at-bat,” along with the front and center identification that the ball belonged to “Jeb Lowry.”

“I had a good idea because (Jacoby) Ellsbury got the same thing on his first hit,” Lowrie said. “When I first got (the fake ball) I thought it was a joke, but they played up. Beckett sold it pretty good.”

Theo Epstein has to be proud of his 2005 draft class as Lowrie became the fourth player to see time in the big leagues. He was solid defensively last night and his one hit was huge. Lowrie also tied a 61-year old record with 3 RBIs in his first MLB game.

With the Bruins taking on the Canadiens Thursday night in Game 5 of their NHL playoff tilt, the Boston Red Sox will once again be relegated to the NESN Plus channel, which means no game in HD. Click here to find the NESN Plus channel on your cable or satellite provider. NESN will have the pre-game show at 5:30 PM.
