The Boston Celtics pounded the Charlotte Hornets 101-78 Saturday night in front of 19,403 at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. And the biggest oddity of the night besides that dumb arena name was the fact that none of the Parquet Posse played, not one second. Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett sat and watched, while Paul Pierce had the night off after his daughter was born on Friday.
So when the big guns are all out who takes over you ask?
Well the Green were led by Leon Powe who had 22 points and 9 rebounds in a spot start, James Posey who was also inserted into the starting line up added 19 points and Eddie House had 16 points coming off the bench as Boston upped it’s record to 61-15.
That’s 37 wins more that last year. It is the largest single-season turnaround in NBA history and with 6 games left they can tie the franchise record 67 wins set in 1985-86. Coincidentally that is the last time that Boston won a NBA title. It has been 22 long seasons since the 16th banner was hung.
The win also clinched home court through the playoffs for the Celtics.
The Bobcats, who dropped to 29-48, were led by former UConn standout Emeka Okafor who had 17 points and 8 rebounds, Earl Boykins had 15 points off the bench and Raymond Felton had 11 points and 10 assists.
With the win the Celtics are now 35-1 this season against teams with records under .500. Their lone loss came at home to Charlotte in one of the few games where the Green was uninspired.
Up next for Boston are road games at Milwaukee on Tuesday and Washington on Wednesday before returning home to play the Bucks on Friday.
