Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 3/9

March 9th, 2008 by Ian · No Comments ·

Normally we Boston Red Sox fans would be freaking out about six straight losses but alas this is spring training where games don’t matter. What matters is the players get their work in and improve each time out.

Daisuke Matsuzaka getting ready to throw a pitchToday the Red Sox visited Vero Beach to take on the Los Angeles Dodgers in what will be the last trip the Red Sox to make to Dodgertown unless another team moves there. It was an uneventful game for the most part after the first inning where we saw the Red Sox put runners in scoring position with no outs and fail to bring a run home. The most excitement came when Matt Kemp took Daisuke Matsuzaka deep for a 3-run homer in the Dodgers 4-0 win over the Red Sox in front of a record crowd at Holman Stadium.

Matsuzaka wasn’t great but wasn’t bad either today. The problem was his high pitch count in his 3 innings of work. Matsuzaka went 3 plus innings giving up 3 hits, 3 runs and 3 walks. He did strike out five Dodgers though. The home run was obviously not a good thing but after Chin-lung Hu led off the 2nd inning for the Dodgers, the Red Sox pitchers didn’t give up a hit the rest of the way. Bryan Corey threw two perfect innings, David Aardsma and Jon Switzer also had perfect innings with Aardsma striking out two. The Dodgers did touch up Devern Hansack without the benefit of a hit as Hansack walked 2 batters. The run off of him came on wild pitch.

Offensively, Doug Mirabelli went 2-for-3 while Alex Cora, David Ortiz and Joe Thurston were 1-for-3. That sums up the Red Sox offense today folks. They had a few opportunities to break through against Esteban Loiaza but were unable to get anything going with runners in scoring position.

Bartolo Colon seems happy after his outing

Bartolo Colon threw a simulated game this morning and looked good. He will most likely make his Red Sox spring debut on Thursday where he will be limited to about 30 pitches.

“If it is an inning, it might be 20-25 (pitches),” Farrell said. “But you could also see him going through an inning fairly quickly because he locates the ball. That’s the one thing in all of his bullpens, his command of the baseball has been very good, particularly with the four- and two-seam fastballs.”

This morning I told you about Josh Beckett maybe missing the Japan trip. Here is the take on the situation from the GoldBlog and Extra Bases.

And I must say it was an absolute pleasure listening to Vin Scully call the game today as the feed on MLB.tv was from the Dodgers. If you want to catch the game in the Red Sox television market, tune into NESN at 8 PM tonight as they will be replaying the game.
