Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 2/28

Josh Beckett executing pitches

Since you’re just getting home from work or up from the dinner table, let’s recap you of the day’s Red Sox news.

As you noticed in the last post, Tito and Big Papi went for rides in a motorcycle sidecar from the police escort they had yesterday. What was not known at the time was that Kyle Synder went for a ride too and he actually volunteered for it!

Kyle Snyder had it the worst. Francona only went from the airport to the White House, then Ortiz to Walter Reed. The longest trip was Walter Reed back to Reagan National, after the sun went down.

“I didn’t feel my face about five minutes into it,” said Snyder, who volunteered. “I knew what I was in store for. All the same, it was pretty cool to be part of a police escort. About halfway through, I was helping them direct traffic.”

Snyder had the added comfort of trying to cram his 6-foot-8 frame into the car. And he didn’t wear a police helmet, since Ortiz kept his as a souvenier.

“Zero leg room,” Snyder said. “I was really surprised actually how small it was. I saw David in it and I was like, I’ve got to be able to fit in it. I thought [the helmet] looked a little too funny. I’m not sure it would have fit me, with my hair, although David’s hair is a little bit longer, too.”

Jacoby Ellsbury sliding homeAnd now on to the game against Boston College. The Red Sox won the game today by the final score of 24-0. Everyone pitched well in the game as only Javier Lopez gave up the only hit. The good thing is that the hit was hit by a righty. After his 2 inning four strikeout performance, Josh Beckett was already in mid-season press conference form, already talking about “executing pitches”.

[Facing a college team] I’m out there trying to do everything I can. It doesn’t matter. You’re out there trying to execute pitches. It doesn’t matter who you’re facing, doesn’t matter if it’s a media game, a college team or facing big league hitters. I told somebody that today, I’m not going to let them hit it. It doesn’t matter. I’m out there trying to do my job. My job right now is to get in shape for the season. If I’m out there facing a college team and I’m messing around, I might take that into another game. That’s not what I’m trying to do.

That should update you as to today’s happenings in Ft. Myers. Since you’ve probably got nothing to do tonight, head over to our good friend Texy’s blog, Center Field, where she has an open thread from the afternoon game and also for the game currently going on against Northeastern. We will be working with her during the season on doing some more open game threads. So head on over and leave your witty remarks with Texy.
