Red Sox News & Notes @ SOX & Dawgs

With a lot of news coming out from the Red Sox camp today, I thought we’d take a look at the important stuff.

The Boston Red Sox made the official announcement that Bartolo Colon has been signed to a minor league contract and will be in camp tomorrow. He missed his flight or something like that. Theo Epstein had this to say about the signing:

“Well, signing Colon to a minor league deal, we think, is a no risk potential high reward signing. He’s on a minor league contract, going to show up here at camp tomorrow and we’ll do an evaluation of how far he is away from helping us. But it takes more than five starting pitchers to get through a season. Obviously he’s an accomplished guy and if we can get him back to a point where he’s throwing well, he can certainly help us at some point this season.”

To see what else Theo Epstein had to say, click here to see the transcript from Amalie Benjamin at the Boston Globe.

I like the move of signing Colon. It’s not like you’re breaking the bank to sign the guy only giving him a $1 million if he makes the team. And if he can return to somewhat of his old self, he could really help the Sox. Plus as I said in a comment, you can never have enough pitching.

Dodgers skipper Joe Torre said he won’t miss the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry at all.

The Red Sox have hired former pitcher Bruce Hurst as a special instructor for player development. It’s not a full-time job but rather a part-time one that will keep him active with the organization. Hurst is currently in Red Sox camp as special instructor.

“It’s been 20 years since I’ve been back in a Red Sox uniform and I’m looking forward to helping out,” Hurst said. “They’re going to send me to minor league teams once or twice a month to report back on what I see, help out where I can, just any special projects as I go along.

“I’ve developed certain philosophies that I really believe. I really believe in strong, very sound fundamentals as far as delivery. I believe in developing a strong mind and a belief system that they can compete at a high level. That they learn how to be able to not just throw strikes but be able to pitch within a major league strike zone and underneath the major league pressure and the microscope.”

The Red Sox will be inducting eight new members into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in November. The inductees are outfielder Mike Greenwell, pitcher Bill Lee, pitcher Frank Sullivan, first baseman Mo Vaughn, pitcher Wes Ferrell, shortstop Everett Scott, scout George Digby and longtime executive Edward Kenney Sr.

The ceremony will take place on November 7th at the Marriot Copley Hotel in Boston.

And here is some video goodness of Manny Delcarmen and Jacoby Ellsbury from NECN.
