The New England Patriots let the 4 p.m. deadline to tag a player as the franchise player come and go. Speculation was that wide receiver Randy Moss was going to be tagged meaning he would get at least a one year tender offer for $7.84 million.Â
With the team passing on tagging Moss one of following will be happening:
- Moss goes to free agency and he signs with another team or even back with New England
- The possibility also exists that Moss may be in possession of a brand new multi-year contract with the Patriots
The reasoning being that according to league rules, and we know how the Patriots love following league rules, no long-term multi-year deals can be announced until the the NFL’s 2008 calendar year starts one week from tomorrow on February 29th.
Free agency starts that day as well, so if you really feel that Moss is needed on this team, you’ll probably be a little on edge for the next eight days until a decision is announced.
Moss came to the Patriots on a draft weekend trade with Oakland in which he restructed his contract from $9 million last season to $3 million plus incentives. Moss is reportedly seeking a multi-year deal from New England in the $8 million to $9 million range. If Moss hits free agency I’m sure he will command more money in the open market.Â
