Red Sox Minor Leaguers Talk About Calhoun

February 17th, 2008 by Ian · No Comments ·

The Red Sox and Jim CalhounI know you’re sitting there asking me, what do the Red Sox and Jim Calhoun have in common? Well if you remember back to the Red Sox Rookie development program back in January, UConn men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun was one of the people who spoke to the players during the program. Calhoun even gave the rookies shirts that said “Connecticut Basketball”.

Jeff Goldberg from the Hartford Courant was able to talk with Red Sox minor leaguers Dusty Brown and Justin Masterson briefly to get their thoughts on the leader of the UConn Huskies.

Dusty Brown:

“I’m not really a UConn fan, not a college basketball fan,” Brown admitted. “But it’s comfortable for working out.”

“He was pretty good,” Brown said. “He seemed like a genuine guy. He wasn’t just trying to give us a pep talk. He wasn’t BS-ing with us. He was a cool guy.”

Justin Masterson:

“He was one of my favorite guys, just because it’s so amazing how he’s been at Connecticut for 22 years and just really turned that program around,” Masterson said. “He had so many good things to say, a motivational-type talk. The reputation you’re going to leave, how people are going to view you. He said you have to work hard, you have to be willing to go the extra distance in order to be one of the best.”
