Redskins Hire Zorn

February 9th, 2008 by Steve · 3 Comments ·

The Washington Redskins will introduce their new head coach tomorrow afternoon at 3 P.M. When I first heard Adam Scheffter of the NFL Network break the news on Fox Sports Radio tonight, I said to myself “Sam Horn but he played baseball?’ Then I realized he said Jim Zorn.

Jim Zorn (r) to be named Redskins head coach on SundayYup, Jm Zorn.

The same Jim Zorn who Redskins owner Dan Snyder just hired to be the offensive coordintor on January 26th. The same Jim Zorn, who has never held a position higher than quarerbacks coach until January 26th.

After all the secretive interviews and being snubbed by several candidates and actually firing one that was already employed by him after he interviewed him four times for the job he went for a no name. This is getting weirder than the Roger Clemens-Debbie Clemens-Brian McNamee ass play triangle.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck is a believer in Zorn and told Sheffter this week at the Pro Bowl that he couldn’t understand why Zorn wasn’t being interviewed for the head coaches job. That was Thursday. Sheffter than called the Redskins to see if he was a candidate, got nothing out of them, and two days later they hire Zorn.

So there’s a couple possibilities here. One is that Hasselbeck, being close to Zorn, knew when he talked to Sheffter that Zorn was involved or about to be involved in the process. Another is that the Redskins choose their head coaches based on media inquiries and the final one is that Snyder read Hasselbeck’s mind.

This is surprising, in that not only was Zorn never even mentioned as a candidate, but that Snyder usually goes for the big, hot name. He interviewed a bunch of those and in the end has seemingly decided that he hasn’t really gotten much out the big names in the past maybe the no name gets him the Super Bowl title he has tried so hard to buy.

After all the candidates he interviewed, he goes with a guy who has no coaching experience. Maybe this is the way to go for him. He really hasn’t had too much success with Marty Schottenheimer or Spurrier. Gibbs did at least get them to the playoffs twice in four years.

Also none of those coaches had winning records in their time with the Skins. Gibb’s first time around is a different story than this time.
