Red Sox News & Notes – 2/4

As I sit here writing this, I can honestly say I am still in a bit of shock from last night’s Super Bowl. I can only imagine how the Patriots organization feels. So let’s now turn our focus again off the Pats and take a look at the Red Sox.

I caught this on ESPN.com from Peter Gammons:

“We’d better enjoy [Josh] Beckett the next three years,” one Boston Red Sox official said, “Because we won’t be able to sign him after his deal is up after 2010.”

That’s not something we really want to hear but it could end up being reality. Beckett’s contract calls for him to be paid $9.5 million in 2008, $10.5 million in 2009 and in 2010 the Red Sox hold a $12 million club option w/$2 million buyout (vests w/28 starts in ‘09 or 56 starts in ‘08 & ‘09).

With Johan Santana and Barry Zito getting big contracts, odds are C.C. Sabathia will end up getting a big deal as well from the Indians or he will hit free agency at the end of the 2008 season and a bidding war will ensue. The main difference though is they are all lefties and were or are 28 years old at the time of the contracts. Beckett will be 31 at the time he will be eligible for free agency in 2011.

I’d expect the Red Sox to take their usual approach of waiting to see how Beckett pitches in 2010 before making any decision on his future despite what the Boston Red Sox official says.

i hope we can keep him…i think as long as he’s killing teams in the playoffs and no blister problems i hope he stays in boston..

They’ll find a way to pay him if he is still worth it its three years away I am far from worried about it.

Next what would make a “Red Sox official” even say that??? Do you have any idea how assine that sounds??? I’m sure Theo looked at that and just put his head in his hands and sighed. It has Larry Lucchino written all over it. and if it is Lucchino and that comes to light there’s gonna be a brawl int he front office with Theo kicking ass and asking questions later, Double L once again looking like an ass and John Henry wondering how the hell this all happened.

Like I said, they will see where he’s at in 2010 and make a decision then. And I am with you, it sounds like the work of LL because I don’t think anyone in their right mind within the Sox organization would ever make a comment like that.
