UCONN moved to 5-0 for the first time as a 1-A team as they pounded the Akron Zips 44-10 on Saturday afternoon at the Rent. The last time the Huskies had won their first five games was back in 1995 when they started the season 6-0.
UCONN started out the game slowly in the first half but turned it on in the second half. Tyler Lorenzen threw for 203 yards and 2 touchdowns. Andre Dixon had 12 carries for 116 yards and one touchdown. He also had 4 catches for 52 yards and a touchdown. Donald Brown II added 69 yards and a touchdown for the Huskies. Tight end Steve Brouse had 3 catches for 62 yards while Terence Jeffers added 3 catches for 36 yards and a touchdown. Tyvon Branch also highlighted the special teams play with a 97 yard kickoff return that broke things open for the Huskies.

UCONN has a bye this week and will travel to Virginia next week to take on the Cavaliers. I’d expect UCONN to work on their offense some as they seem to get out of the gate slowly each game. Another big thing UCONN needs to improve on is their special teams on kickoffs. Akron was able to get good field position each time they received a kickoff. For the most part, UCONN’s defense was able to shut them down.
All in all, a pretty decent game for the Huskies as they now control their destiny. A win over Virginia will make them bowl eligible and after that the meat of the Big East season comes. It would be a shame for the Huskies to start 6-0 and finish at 6-6.

I just hope everyone realizes that because they’re 5-0 doesn’t mean that they are that good. They haven’t really played anyone yet. They still have USF, West Virginia, Rutgers, Cincinnati and Louisville as tough conference opponents.
With that said they should beat Syracuse and hopefully beat Virginia who seems to be having a good year at 4-1 including 3-0 in the ACC which really amazes me but the conference games were close. They beat duke by 11, won @North Carolina by 2 and beat Georgia Tech at home by 5. yesterday they whipped Pitt by 30, they have Middle Tenn next week then the Huskies. Their only loss is @ Wyoming.
Hopefully having three games in a row at home helps them in their bowl bid.
Ian what was the crowd like yesterday? was it a sell out or not? (edit) they show 38,212 on the box score which is 1,788 shy of a sell out.
I totally agree with your assessment of the team. They are 5-0 but really no big test. They should have killed Temple like they did Akron yesterday.
It looked pretty full to me.
Here ya go Steve. This is the AP Poll others:

No votes at all in the coaches poll.
No votes at all in the coaches poll.
That’s because the coaches know what they’re voting for. Most of writers in the AP poll have no clue.
*sigh*
The coaches know the least about what they are voting for. 75% of the coaches don’t even fill out their own poll.
Oh and UConn actually got 23 points in the coaching poll.
Thanks Ben. I missed that when looking.
I am sure UCONN got votes because it’s 1 of 12 undefeated teams in 1-A
