Big Hurt and Dustin McGowan

Chalk me up as one of many in Red Sox Nation who is worried about things right now. I don’t know why I am though as the magic number to make the playoffs is 5 while the magic number to clinch the AL East is 9. Of course we want the Red Sox to win the AL East and have the best record in the American League. The Sox got spizzanked last night as the Big Hurt put a hurting on the Red Sox with 3 home runs. To complicate matters, Dustin McGowan was dealing last night and the Sox could only manage one run. Needless to say, the Sox will need a good outing from Jon Lester tonight. But before he gets out on the mound, let’s take a look at the headlines from the Boston area and Toronto media on this chilly morning in New England.

Magic schmagic……Ian, read my post. Thanks. The UCONN women start practicing in earnest soon, and I can’t wait!

Ahh yes some distractions to take our minds off this mess going on right now. I think we’re ok. Let’s just make the playoffs and let the rest take care of itself.

Injuries are starting to take their toll offensively. Personally, I don’t think it’s an issue as to whether they make the playoffs or not. The Sox need to be careful that they don’t play themselves out of a series by grinding so hard at the end of the season (something I know they didn’t want to do but now have no choice due to the pressure put on them by the Yankees). Even though Manny is resting, who knows if he’ll be ok when he returns. Youkilis, Coco, Ortiz’ knee? And I didn’t even mention the bullpen issues. It’s going to get harder before it gets any easier for the Sox down the stretch

I totally agree with you Jason. The things that made the Red Sox look good earlier in the season are not working now. The Manny injury is huge although Mike Lowell has filled the void pretty well but it’s not the same. With Youk, they are missing the passion and fire he brings to the team. The bullpen is worrisome until you get to Papelbon.
